The Material Serivce Barge sank in 1936 during a squall while hauling a cargo of sand. During the sinking between 15 and 22 souls were lost. She was active for seven years of service on the lakes, due to the unique design of the wreck she was able to pass underneath the bridges without the need to raise them up. The wreck currently sits upright in roughly 30 feet of water, mostly covered with invasive zebra mussels, gobies, and other fish.
